CAUTION: DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE 18 YEARS OR OLDER WITHOUT A LEGAL SECURITY BLANKET? IF YES, YOU MUST READ THIS!

At 18 years old a person is legally considered an adult. As an adult we are each responsible for our own medical decisions. As parents of an 18 year old we lose our rights to participate in our child’s medical decision making or emergency care without written authorization. You hope your adult son or daughter is never involved in an emergency situation, but what would you do if such a tragedy occurred?

Common misconception:

AS A PARENT I WILL HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL AND INVOLVEMENT IN MY ADULT CHILD’S MEDICAL OR EMERGENCY CARE. THE HOSPITALS AND MEDICAL CARE PERSONNEL WILL HAVE TO WORK WITH ME BECAUSE I AM THE PARENT AND I PAY THE BILLS!

WRONG: Every adult should have a DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR MEDICAL CARE. Once a child turns 18 years old, they are legally an adult. Parents of legal adults no longer have the same rights to participate in medical treatment or even receive medical information. Your child may be away at college or just out for the evening, if a medical emergency occurs you may no longer get that “automatic” call from emergency medical care personnel. If you are called to the hospital, you could be prohibited from participating in your child’s medical care decisions or not provided important information. My law firm has created a “Security Blanket” program to cover your adult son or daughter in case of emergency. Your adult son or daughter can execute a springing durable power of attorney for medical care naming you as their patient advocate. We also provide an emergency wallet card for your adult son or daughter to carry in case they are unable to communicate with medical care personnel. The “security blanket” package also includes; medical directive language, HIPAA compliance, statutory acceptance and medical history forms. First annual reaffirmation reminders are automatically sent.

You deserve the peace of mind and any legal adult deserves the protection. Please contact us by email or phone to obtain a security blanket introduction package and worksheet for the “legal adult” in your life. One of the greatest gifts you can give to your “legal adult” and yourself.
